Die, Monster, Die!

Monster of Terror

1965

American visits his girlfriend's ancestral home in England,to find it full of unfriendly villagers and weird things in the basement.

Lacklustre adaptation of Lovecraft, which takes the barest germ of The Color Out of Space to create the most generic horror scenario imaginable. Karloff is good, of course, but is offset by Adams' Brooklyn tough guy act, which is as totally out of place here as it was in most of his films. Somewhat redeemed by the finale, with a radioactive Karloff marauding around in makeup that looks like a cheap Destro cosplay. The Bavaesque lighting effects are nice, too.

The Curse (1987) is a closer adaptation of Lovecraft's story. Not a great film, but better than this.
