The new Outpatients officer, Valerie Sinclair, fails to impress Ewart when she announces plans for budget cuts at the hospital, whilst Cyril revisits Holby having left during the "off-air" time. A security guard is assaulted by two would-be burglars, a female mechanic suffers a serious paralising injury and Duffy receives the worst news from her ex-boyfriends' sister.

Most of the episode is spent with casual references to staff previously related to Holby who have moved on, tieing up the loose ends and explaining the character shifts from the end of the last series to the beginning of this one.
