Sprawling melodrama of an American family in the West through World War One and Prohibition. It's also one of the fakest, tritest piles of shite I've ever seen. Native Americans should rightly be emarassed of their depiction in this film; I doubt the director knows anything about them besides what he read about in National Geographic. So overwrought and unsubtle it makes Douglas Sirk look like Noh drama. I think Hopkins is a wonderful actor, but watching him in this makes me wish he had never taken up acting. I think Glory is a great film, but I wish Zwick would get over himself and not try to be such a effing intellectual. He's the guy who looks down his nose at everyone else and thinks "I'm the only one who gets it. Everyone else is a sheep." I may be a sheep, but I know every film you've directed in the last twenty years has been a hollow, fake slice of Americanized SHIT with Thomas Kinkade cinematography. The fact any of the films earned Oscar nominations just proves Hollywood needs to slide into the ocean and be forgotten.
