Valentino

1977

Ken Russell
Director
United Artists
Studio

Ambitious dancing Italian immigrant makes good (eventually) in Hollywood.

Valentino biopic filtered through the sensibilities of a fairly restrained Ken Russell.

A film that nobody much seems to like, not even its director, Ken Russell. But Nureyev is surprisingly and hypnotically good, the recreation of period and place works despite never getting anywhere near the US of A.

Extras are legion in this one, literally hundreds of them. I spotted a few more names on the tip of the proverbial tongue...
