The archetypal Spaghetti Western. American star, Spain standing in for the US, dubbed Spanish [and German and Italian] actors, and a rousing Ennio Morricone score. The latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie includes a spoof/homage scene 43 years on!
Stranger comes into a tired border town and plays off two feuding clans for his own benefit.
The film that made Spaghetti Westerns big in theStates, and an excellent film to boot, not least of which it is due to it being based on another equally excellent film, Yojimbo (for which Kurosawa successfully sued and made more money off Leone's film than on his own!) Wonderfully sardonic performance by Eastwood. It's amusing to read the horribly negative contemporary reviews and see how utterly out of touch critics like Philip French Bosley Crowther (two insufferably snifffy and pompous prigs) had become.
Homaged many times, but the best come in Robocop and the Back to the Future sequels.
