Clunky remake of a cheesy classic fails in nearly every department. Stan Winston's creature fx are almost the only plus.

Well, the original, while dated, is hardly "cheesy." The remake is pretty clunky, though, being one of those remakes where the director has reverence for the original but still wants to mock it. This never works. Good photography, some good performances (not from the kid who is the focus of the film, unfortunately), but the Martians are hard to take seriously, as is the film as a whole. A good testament as to why filmmakers should make original films and not remakes.
P.S.: Charlie Dell is credited, but nowhere to be seen in the final film. And has anyone else noticed that the main theme and opening credits are very, very similar to the original Total Recall, made four years later?
